Dual shaft (Axial/radial Hybrid) turbos are coming… just when you thought Turbos couldn’t get any better, a design resurrected from a decade ago is resurfacing.
Offering the abilities of a dual stage turbo in one housing, the dual shaft turbo uses both an Axial and radial design in the same housing to make great low speed INSTANT boost and then incredible gains in boost at high rpms.
The design promises to create more boost with less heat than current designs while almost completely eliminating turbo lag.
Because you can size the turbo for best response to throttle at lower rpms, you get a turbo that spools up fast, then the Axial kicks in at high rpms and makes big boost so you get all the big high rpm power as well.
Think of it like bolting a jet engine on the back of your turbo to really start cramming the air in there as the rpms increase.
Its truly a best of both worlds scenario… watch for them on high end cars like Ferrari’s and McLaren’s at first (we would assume) and then moving onto passenger cars and trucks soon after.
