Rebuilding without re-balancing and re-truing the turbine shaft is just asking for a pre-mature failure of the turbocharger.
Turbos get HOT!! Parts warp and even some metal is worn off the Turbine and compressor wheels which throws them out of balance. Even the turbine shafts themselves can be out of true from heat exposure.
Those are common occurrences with turbos, especially vehicles that have been raced OR engines that have hauled heavy loads for extended periods of time and not given a proper cool down after hard use.
We have never had a turbo in our shop that has any sort of mileage/use on it that hasn’t been OUT OF FACTORY SPEC on balance.
These warped or out of balance components will cause the seals to fail… so if you take it to a local shop and they simply put new seals in without checking the turbo and its components for true and or out of balance conditions (they are taking a risk)… and a month or a year later, those seals will fail again.
They will continue to fail until you correct the reason they are failing. An out of balance condition of a Compressor wheel or Turbine wheel or housing or shaft that is “out of true” will continually wobble that seal and wear on it until it fails. But until you fix it AND EMPLOY the equipment needed to fix it and verify its fixed.. that turbo is going to keep failing.
Most tow vehicles and racing cars that are run hard and then are suddenly stopped (from an accident OR the engine is just turned off without a reasonable cool down) will warp the turbo components. Over time, that warped area will continue to get worse and worse until you have a failure.
